Take care of your body — create your own moisturizing products

By Bethany Kogut

As the cold winter months are rolling in, our skin and lips are begging for love. I know that my lips have been chapped and my hands are starting to crack, but have no fear! Many store-bought lotions and chapsticks are full of chemicals that are making your skin more prone to dryness and cracking. With a little fun and time you can help quench the moisture your hands and lips are begging for with organic and homemade lotions and chapsticks.

Both of the following recipes allow for you to add in your favorite essential oils. Some recommended options are lavender, sandalwood and vetiver oil for a soothing mixture. For an energizing mixture, try grapefruit, peppermint, and wintergreen. Try out the Whipped Body Butter Recipe to fix your cracked cuticles and dried out hands or the organic chapstick for when the wind bites your lips.

Whipped Body Butter Recipe
Ingredients:
1-3/4 cups shea butter (unrefined is best)
1/2 cup coconut oil (extra virgin is best)
1/4 cup grape seed oil
essential oils
Directions:
Measure out shea butter and coconut oil (which will be solid at a room temperatures below 76 degrees) and melt over medium-low heat in a double broiler, stirring constantly until there are no lumps left.
2. Let cool about 30 minutes, then stir in the grape seed oil and essential oil(s) of your choosing.
3. Cover the oil mixture and freeze for about 20-30 minutes, or refrigerate for 1-2 hours. You want the mixture to start to solidify but not completely harden, a consistency similar to soft wax or softened butter.
4. Transfer the mixture to a mixing bowl and whip until soft and fluffy.
5. Spoon into a clean glass jar and smooth over skin anytime you need extra moisture
